This issue of Scientific Journal of Gdynia Maritime University includes papers by workers of the GMU Faculty of Marine Engineering, University of Gdańsk, Polish Register of Shipping in Gdańsk, Kaliningrad University of Technology, Master Mariners Association, and University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven. The papers present the results of studies whose scope covers the fields of exact and natural sciences, as well as engineering and technical sciences.

The issue presents topics related to the operation of marine vessels. Attention was paid, among other things, to issues related to environmental protection. The impact of the combustion chamber shape on the amounts of soot emitted by ship-board self-ignition combustible piston engines. The issue of problems with hydrocarbon content measurements in gases during ship cargo tank gassing-up operations is addressed.

The field of exact and natural sciences is represented by a paper on issues related to surface energy of solids and selection of effective substrates for bioadhesion in aqueous media.

The issue also presents topics related to anchor procedure and typical human errors that are the cause of many marine accidents related to anchoring of ships and their manoeuvring in anchorage areas. The author focused on typical marine accidents recorded on VLCC tankers.

This issue also brings a paper by Prof. Benedikt Klobes from the University of Applied Sciences, Bremerhaven, who discusses the possibilities of employing resonant ultrasound spectroscopy in thermoelectrics and aluminium alloys.
