Hybrid propulsion concepts on ships
The hybrid technology is not only a current issue in the field of electric vehicles. Also in the area of ships there are some projects to replace the proven diesel mechanical drives by innovative drive concepts. In this paper the feasibility of hybrid propulsion concepts is examined for different types of vessels. The paper shows that there are definitely opportunities to save energy by using hybrid drive systems on ships. In some cases this can even return the much higher investment by savings in fuel.
